Want to be a better dancer? Do yoga, learn why!

Dancing is a powerful form of movement art, which gives every individual to express themselves through their very own unique bodies. Dance may look effortless, but it requires a lot of strength, flexibility and stamina.

Professional dancers are facing a lot of injuries when they practice. Dance is a physically challenging activity. Studies have shown that dancing five hours a day or longer leads to increased risk of stress fractures and other injuries. The intensive training that many dancers have gets them a little time to recover between the sessions. Dance can sometimes be painful for the body and actually increase the levels of anxiety.

This is where yoga can be really beneficial to dancers.

When dancers practising yoga on a regular basis, can help them to develop concentration and focus and fights stress. Yoga calms down the mind and gives more sense of inner awareness. Dancing is a very competitive career and could have a negative impact on some individuals. Yoga is quite the opposite. Yoga encourages a non-competitive and accepting attitude toward the body and this more compassionate and accepting way of approaching physicality could be so helpful during times of injury or stress.

Yoga creates a deep internal awareness of the body. An enhanced bodily awareness can allow you to move more freely and clearly, potentially improving your dancer’s movement. If you want to improve the alignment in your yoga practice, read this

If you want to improve the alignment in your yoga practice, read this

If you want to improve the alignment in your yoga practice, read this

No matter if you are new in yoga or you have years of practising, the alignment is one of the most important things. When you are practising the most common thing that you hear at yoga classes is to listen to your body.

We all have different bodies, some of us are “blessed” with stiffness and yoga helps to release all the tension in your body, others are “cursed” with flexibility and can move through each asana very easily and effortlessly. But why alignment is so important?

First, let us explain to you what alignment really means.

The simplest explanation is that Alignment is the ideal way that a pose should be done. But what “ideal” means? As we mentioned we all have different bodies, so don’t freak out of the word “ideal”. In this case, it means ideal to your body. The alignment is actually more about the process to put your body in the right position than an end result. Also, the different styles of yoga have their own understanding of the alignment. Iyengar and Ashtanga, for example, are like the “yoga police” in the yoga world. In this practice, it’s all about the perfect alignment. And with all the props that are used in these practices, you can achieve the “perfect” alignment for your body. But let’s be honest, these practices are often hard for beginners or sometimes boring for regular practitioners. Also besides all the pros used during those practices, you still can’t do a handstand for example or you just can’t find your balance and you lurch all the time. So is there an option that can help you with all of that? Let’s find out.

FlyHigh Yoga – the alignment-based style of yoga

Using the right tool is the key to improve your alignment in your yoga practice. The FlyHigh Yoga Hanging Belt is a fantastic tool used for performing aerial yoga, but also the perfect tool to help you to find the “perfect” alignment for your body. The belt is there to support you and help you to fix your posture habits. A FlyHigh yoga belt is excellent to intensifying your ground yoga poses. Using it can relieve tension in the muscles, elongate and decompresses the spine, and increase flexibility. Practising FlyHigh yoga is the perfect complimentary practice that can help you to correct your alignment. Also is a great workout to build up straight in your hands, body core, your back and legs. For the beginners in yoga is a really fun and challenging experience. All of them can practice all of the regular standings poses with the help of the belt and build confidence on the mat. With the FlyHigh Yoga belt, you are able to do regular yoga poses and other gravity-defying moves in a supported way. This makes the progression of your practice easier, more precise, more intense and more fun! Other amazing benefits of practising FlyHigh yoga is that with the help of the belt, even if this is your first time on the mat you can do poses that you can’t do in the regular poses like handstand.

You can practice FlyHigh Yoga everywhere, alone or with a partner – used as a tool in pairs or groups will bring you even greater joy, fun and creativity, you can work with your partner(s) as well on deep adjustments, though on our FlyHigh Yoga Teacher Trainings.

Practising FlyHigh Yoga can increase the connection with your bodies. Focusing on alignment fosters your growing sense of body awareness and boosts your self-confidence. Correct alignment also helps you be aware of your posture in your everyday life. This ultimately goes a long way in enhancing a good physical posture and appearance.

Vinyasa the poetry of yoga practices

Vinyasa the poetry of yoga practices

Vinyasa the poetry of yoga practices

There is a yoga practice that is full of silent beautiful rhythm. Every movement of the body is so smooth and graceful, is like a melody. The amazing flow that creates a feeling of lightness, ease and relaxation. That’s how the Vinyasa yoga feels and looks like.

The meaning of the word “Vinyasa” can explain a lot about the inner purpose of this practice, which is “arranging something in a special way“. In this yoga classes, the main is to coordinate movement with breath to flow from one pose to the next. Before we tell you why Vinyasa is the poetry of yoga, let’s get deep into the world of yoga branches and different practices, to discover the beauty of this physical and spiritual teaching.

In the beginning, there was only one style of yoga that evolves through the years. The most significant influence on the evolution of yoga is the Western world. Nowadays yoga transformed so much to adapt the ancients teaching to the modern world and people’s needs for spiritual awakening, healing and physical activities.

We can trace the roots of all the yoga styles that we know today to Hatha yoga, Ashtanga and Iyengar yoga. If you are new into yoga you should know that these styles are the grammar of yoga practice. They are known from centuries and are the inspiration behind every yoga style that we know today.

The Grammar of yoga

The traditional yoga styles are more challenging and highly structured for some people. For example, the Iyengar’s method is a form of hatha yoga and is based on giving primacy to the physical alignment of the body in the poses. In this style, it is taught that there is a correct way to do each pose and that every student will one day be able to attain perfect poses through consistent practice. The traditional yoga practices teach as so much about every asana, they are truly the grammar of yoga that is the foundation that every practitioner should know. But let be honest, sometimes the obsolete and old outlook of yoga can be less enjoyable and difficult, and too much for our twenty-first-century lifestyle.

The poetry of yoga

Nowadays yoga styles can be so fun and innovative. For Jose Luis Jimenez, who is a long time yoga practitioner and teacher, Vinyasa practice is the poetry of yoga. He has originally trained in Tai Chi and Iyengar yoga and learned the depth of traditions of this ancient teaching.

When Jose came to Bali he started his modern approach to yoga learning and teaching Vinyasa style. He was so inspired by this modern approach and immediately fell in love with the different Vinyasa yoga styles. Jose saw that yoga can be fun and asanas can be done with a more energetic and flowing way. This amazing experience makes him a truly unique Vinyasa yoga teacherJose has a deep understanding of the yoga teaching, that’s why his classes are initiating the work, sustaining it and then building to a peak, and completing and integrating it.

The most important thing in the Vinyasa practice are the two primary teachings – building a proper foundation and then constructing the practice to its peak and then slowly cool it down. Each of these phases has its own lessons to impart, and each relies on the work of the previous phase. Vinyasa yoga requires that we cultivate an awareness that links each action to the next—one breathe at a time. And all this is dressed up with so many energetic and flowing motions, full concentration and awareness of the mind. In Vinyasa every asana is perfectly connected to the next one, like a rhymed words.

To experience all of that you can join Jose’s weekly Vinyasa classes at Ubud Yoga Centre, Bali and The Yoga Barn. If you want to sink deeper there is nothing more perfect then join Inner Yoga’s 200HR Teacher Trainings where Jose is a leading teacher. You can learn key postures in Vinyasa – take an in-depth look at postures, alignment, adjustments, use of props and sequencing. And the most amazing thing is that you will have the opportunity to learn and practice this spiritual teaching in paradise. Inner Yoga retreats are handle at the amazingly stunning Azadi Retreat. Check Inner Yoga website to save your spot now.

A yogi between two different worlds

A yogi between two different worlds

A yogi between two different worlds

We met a lot of amazing people during our FlyHigh yoga teacher training who became inspiring yoga teachers. We would like to introduce you to Tatiana, who was a mentor in our latest FHY teacher training in Shanghai.

Tatiana is from Russia, but she had spent the last 5 years practising yoga in Shanghai. Apart from her yogi lifestyle, she is passionate about healthy and delicious food and fashion. As we all know every yogi has a special story about how yoga transformed their lives.

The beginning of a long yoga journey

Tatiana’s first acquaintance with yoga began a long time ago when she still lived in Russia. Back in the days, yoga wasn’t so popular in Russia and not everyone understands it. Her first yoga practice wasn’t pleasant at all and she felt very dizzy, but she decided to give yoga a second chance.

And … ”Looking back, I would like to say how grateful I am to my teacher, who believed in me and encouraged me to not give up. When I moved to Shanghai, I didn’t understand how I could I live without yoga. That’s why I started to look for a place to continue my practice. I have tried a lot of yoga studios and teachers until I found the right place, where I can deepen my practice and knowledge about yoga. There was I time that I had a very busy schedule, but I never missed a single class. Doesn’t matter if I was in a good or bad mood, or just tired, I give myself a magic kick to go to my yoga practice.

The reason behind my devotion and motivation is that yoga recharges me like nothing else, and it’s the easiest way to stay healthy and mindful in the dynamics and stressful everyday life…”

Other than living and practising yoga in Asia, Tatiana has had the opportunity to not only explore the Asian yoga lifestyle but also the European one. Her life in Berlin helps her to see the difference between the western and eastern yoga life.

“In my opinion, there are more yoga schools, opportunities and “yoga- likeminded” people in Asia. Meanwhile, yoga in Europe still has the potential to expand and develop. Of course, you can find everything you need in the big cities, but if you go further out of them, it becomes more complicated and challenging for the yoga practitioners.

Yoga can make you fly

Tatiana’s yoga journey took her to Bali. The island that has the intoxicating power to provoke you to experiment and try new things. This magical vibes took her to a FlyHigh yoga class.

“I started practising FlyHigh yoga in Bali with different teachers and I liked it very much because I saw real progress in my usual Ashtanga practice. It helped me to improve some asanas. I remember being so inspired by the practice, that I bought the FlyHigh yoga DVD and the FHY belt to continue to practice when I went back to Shanghai. I was so passionate about flying, so when I returned to Bali for the third time I was lucky to be a part of the FlyHigh teacher training.”

FlyHigh yoga combines traditional yoga poses and postures with the help of the belt. And it’s inspired by the oldest traditions of Iyengar yoga. The beauty of this kind of aerial yoga is that it gives you freedom and helps you to learn and be more confident in your regular yoga practice. As Tatiana said, she loves it because the FlyHigh yoga helped her to discover a new dimension of her daily yoga practice.

“The key is the belt. You can practice the same poses that you still can’t do in your regular practice for some reasons. For example, if you can’t do a handstand, when you know that your belt is there for you and supports you, you can do this asana so easily. The FHY belt can help you to learn how to adjust your hands, head, legs and body in these positions, and to gain strength. After practising FlyHigh yoga you can easily go into the poses in your regular practice. But you have to understand, my advice to all of the yogis is that there is no magic in life! Practice yoga regularly, be patience to yourself and your body.  Work hard and one day you will achieve your goals.”

After this experience, she joined the latest FlyHigh yoga teacher training, led by the founder of FlyHigh yoga – Jose Luis Jimenez, as a mentor in Shanghai.

“This opportunity was more than just an experience. As I told teacher Jose, the feeling was like in those 5 days I had lived another life. Five amazing days which were dedicated only for yoga. Meeting those 22 amazing and dedicated yogis, was such an inspiration for me. In the beginning, as a teacher, you have to create the trust with your students, break the ice and by the end of the training you’d already know everyone. At the end, I was so happy, but at the same time sad, because the training was over. The connection between the people was so strong, regardless of the short period of time that they know each other. I remember the last day, when the training was over and everyone took their certificate, people just stayed at the yoga studio until late at night and talked to each other, asked me questions and shared between us the love of yoga and FlyHigh yoga. It’s amazing how FlyHigh yoga can bring people together, make them friends, like a family.”

Yoga is lifelong learning, a journey that never stops. You can find more inspirational and real yogi stories on our blog. If you are curious about the yogis’ lifestyle in Shanghai, check Lynn’s story, who is one of the best yoga teachers there.

How yoga can be dangerous with a bad yoga teacher

How yoga can be dangerous with a bad yoga teacher

How yoga can be dangerous with a bad yoga teacher

You may wonder how yoga can be dangerous. It’s proven that the risk of injury from practising yoga can be much lower than the risk of injury from many other forms of exercise such as running or fitness. Yoga is an activity that has always been described as an injury-free practice that has many benefits like relaxation, stress relief, pain relief, a stronger and more flexible body and a more peaceful mind.

So, how can yoga be dangerous?

Yoga has been a big trend around the world for the last few years because it offers a lifestyle teaching combined with physical exercises to all of the practitioners. As we said earlier, yoga practices can provide pain relief. A lot of people took yoga classes because their friends or doctor told them that their bodies would feel much better, but a lot of those people decided to stop doing yoga after the first class. Why? That is because they went to a class that was not suitable for them and they were taught by a horrible teacher.

Because of the huge popularity of yoga and the countless teachers’ training, it’s almost possible for everyone to become a yoga teacher. Unfortunately, some of these teachers would later teach yoga in an unsafe way and make yoga practice a horrible experience for a lot of people. It is very important to be able to recognize a bad yoga teacher because yoga is beneficial for everyone. If you happen to be in a yoga class that you absolutely don’t enjoy, it is most likely that you are having a problem with the way the teacher guides the yoga practice and not the yoga in general.

Fear not, we are here to give you some signs to look for when you visit a yoga class for the first time. Beginner teachers who want to improve their teaching skills may also find this article to be helpful.

The personal touch

Imagine going to a yoga class where the teacher is late and doesn’t even bother to introduce himself. This is important because the first thing that a yoga teacher needs to do is to win the trust of their students. As a student, especially if this is your first time at a yoga class, you may feel nervous and insecure. A little introduction will help the students get ready as it takes some of the pressure off of their shoulders and make them feel more comfortable. Creating a friendly and safe environment is one of the most important things to do before starting a yoga practice.

Understanding the students’ needs

Another red flag that you need to pay attention for is when your yoga teacher doesn’t ask the class about any health and safety questions before starting the practice. As we mention in the beginning, yoga can be really dangerous for the students that have recently experienced injuries, or back problems that require any special treatment. Those students need special attention and are suggested to be given modifications to prevent them from aggravating their injuries. This also applies for the beginner students. If the class is mostly attended by beginners that means that the teacher should keep that in mind and put an extra effort in explaining the asanas and not only use their Sanskrit names. Understanding the different needs of the students allows the teacher to meet them where they are. Then, give props and modifications that are relevant and necessary–so no one goes out in a stretcher. Explain at the beginning of the class that students should modify their poses to “keep themselves safe” or to “honour their bodies”. The teacher should choose poses for the class that allow people with injuries to get help and the people without injuries to feel challenged.

The art of leading a yoga class

Yoga practice is not only a physical but also an energy practice. That’s why the way the practice is built up is very important. There are 4 phases of a yoga practice – warming up, building up, heating up and cooling down. You can’t imagine how many students have dropped off of yoga classes because the teacher didn’t know how to properly lead the practice. An incorrect structure of a yoga class can lead to injuries, dizziness, confusion and tension. If you, as a student go to a yoga practice that feels confusing and finds it hard to follow the teacher or feel the absence of a smooth flow between the poses, please feel free to leave the class.

Fortunately, there are more good teachers than bad ones in the world. Remember that the very nature of yoga promotes compassion and the pursuit of wisdom. If you’re a beginner and you are looking for a yoga class, keep these signs in mind and you’ll find a teacher and group that will be able to meet your needs.

As a teacher, you can improve your teaching skills every day so you can provide as much assistance to your students in their journey to self-knowing and healing. Being a yoga teacher is a mission and not just a job, that’s why it is so important to be fully committed. If you want to continue to build up and develop your yoga teaching skills, joins us in some of our courses and become an amazing yoga teacher who understands and supports the need of your students.

Take the leap this New Year and turn your world upside down

Take the leap this New Year and turn your world upside down

Take the leap this New Year and turn your world upside down

Looking back to the past year we see all the amazing people we have met and all the experiences that we went through. Yoga is always a powerful part of our lives. The New Year brings deep reflection and introspection that can amplify processes of self-inquiry, expanding our spiritual awareness and commitment to yogic living and passing everything that we had learned to the people around us.

The New Year is around the corner and is time to set our intention, something that we want to cultivate more of in our work life, relationships or life in general. This intention is called San Culpa in Sanskrit and it is a powerful tool for manifesting our deepest desires into reality. While this is classically done in yoga, this can also be done at the beginning of each day and most certainly at the start of a new year, something we commonly know as the “new year’s resolution.”

Give your self-time to think about all the lessons you had learned and all the self-healing that you had gone through. Thank yourself, be kind to yourself and look at what is waiting in front of you…

This new year we set the intention to help you grow, to have a better understanding about yourself and to go deeper in your yoga practice or to become a better yoga teacher, so you can help others.

There are a lot of definitions to what yoga means. The simple explanation is the connection, a union with the inner self. Yoga means to completely know yourself and to be at peace with it. Letting go of all the things that make us suffer and to embrace the freedom. Yoga is the clear knowledge of being one with the source of all life.

This New Year we invite you to be free, to be brave enough to give yourself everything that your soul so desperately needs. The connection with the mind, the union between your thoughts, feelings and soul.

How FlyHigh yoga can help you this New Year?

Nothing changes the way you view your own life experience like seeing the way other people live. This New Year takes the leap and travel. Meet other yogis and see the world from a different perspective. Travelling is transformative; seeing new places can take you out of your element and remind you of why you are alive. There is no place more amazing to explore your yoga experience, than Bali.

In Bali, you can meet people who will understand you and support you on your journey. Deepen your yoga practice by trying something new and excited.

FlyHigh yoga would like to offer you a life-changing experience in this new year. We are starting our two types of training that will help you build your teaching career and provoke you to see the world from a different perspective by meeting extraordinary people from all over the world and share your love for yoga with them. Imagine 5 days of intense learning about alignment, adjustment, anatomy biomechanics, bio movement and so much more. Sink into the magical world of guided relaxation and mystic healing. Turn your world upside down, face your fears and free your mind from all the blockages. If you are new at aerial yoga you can sign up to our beginner’s level where we will help you to set up the foundations of your FlyHigh yoga practice. After that, you can continue with our Fly High Yoga Level Two, which will bring you out to do any adjustments. With every level two, you will gather another 50 Hour so you can keep doing another level two. When you take four courses 50 Hour FlyHigh Yoga, you can combine it into a 200 Hour Yoga Alliance Certificate. Joining our FlyHigh Yoga community is an amazing opportunity and uplifting experience. You will be supported by so many people around the world that teach and practice FlyHigh yoga and help their students to deepen their yoga practice, be focused on the asanas and overcome their fears. If you are intrigued, check our upcoming courses here.

We have planned so many exciting things this year and we would be so happy to have you join us on this journey of self-knowing and loving. You can meet our inspiring founder Jose Luis Jimenez in Ubud, Bali, or maybe join him in China for our annual tour. You can find out more about it very soon on our event calendar. Some of our graduate students around the world are also planning trainings all over Europe and Asia that you can check out.

This New Year will be so exciting and full of adventures and transforming experiences. It’s up to you to make it memorable! Take the first step to turn your world upside down!
